"Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise." Deuteronomy 6:6-7
Educational ministries are a vital part of who Good Shepherd is as a church - we have a Sunday School for just about everyone from 9 am to 10 am on Sunday mornings:
Our Sunday School classes for 5th Grade and Younger use the Deep Blue Curriculum. The students begin together with a video and then break up into appropriate age groups to dig deeper in the weekly Bible story, play games, and do other crafts and activities. We have a crew of dedicated and creative Sunday School teachers who make sure that all children feel welcome in our Sunday School classes.
Each year we either offer a Pre-Confirmation Class (6th and 7th Graders) or a Confirmation Class (7th and 8th Graders). In Pre-Confirmation the 6th and 7th Graders use a curriculum called Claim the Life which helps these pre-teens to start applying the Bible and their faith to their every day life and the world around them.
On opposite years 7th and 8th graders take part in a comprehensive Confirmation Program that includes Sunday classes which cover a breadth of topics such as: God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, Understanding Worship and the Sacraments, Christian History, Local Church History, Mission, and a special section about the tough issues teens face. In addition Confirmation students attend an opening and closing retreat, take part in a plethora of service projects, and enjoy the fellowship of growing together as Christians.
Once Confirmed youth join the Sr. High Class which is a discussion heavy class in which the teens dig deeper into the Bible and what in means for their life now and in their future.
We also offer 4 adult Sunday School classes:
Young at Heart: This group varies in age but centers around trying to understand scripture in fresh and new ways. The Young at Heart Class is the group most engaged in mission activity in our church - often planning and lending a hand to a variety of service events in the church and community.
Koinonia: This Sunday School class centers around the themes of Christian fellowship, though discussion oriented this class is very traditional in their approach to the Bible.
Christian Journeys: This discussion based class is perfect for someone yearning to learn something new and engage deeply in tough questions. This class uses modern videos and media to try and better understand themselves, the scriptures, and the world around them.
Adult Bible Study: This class will take your back to the days of traditional Sunday School. You'll sing the songs you remember form your youth and participate in a lecture based Bible class.
During our 10:20 am worship service we also provide educational opportunities for our younger children who may not be interested in sitting through worship.
Nursery Care is provided for babies and toddlers during the entirety of worship. Angela Houck is our dedicated Nursery Superintendent. She provides a safe, clean, and modern environment for your young child to play and learn during worship.
After the Children's Message during the 10:20am worship kids in 4th Grade and younger are dismissed to Children's Church. This 45 minute program highlights a Bible Story and the children participate in hands-on activities related to the story. Our teachers strive to provide a balanced lesson which includes crafts, high energy games, plays and drama, and even math or science!
If you looked at our "I'M NEW" page you will have noticed that during the summer our schedule is a little different. We have one combined 9:30 am worship service and no education hour. We always start our combined services the second Sunday in June and our last combined worship is the Sunday before Labor Day in September. The same educational opportunities offered during the 10:20 am service are available during the 9:30 am summer worship (Nursery Care and Children's Church). There is no education hour so Adult Sunday School classes may choose to meet if desired at 8:30 am.
An important part of our summer educational program is Vacation Bible School.
Our church combines with St. John's Lutheran to provide an exciting and engaging VBS program. VBS is a little different here - it is a 6 day program split into two weeks. This summer on June 13, 14, 15 and June 21, 21, 22. Children in 6th Grade and younger can join us from 9 am to noon for songs, games, science, crafts, bible stories, snacks, and more! In addition we provide After Care from noon to 5 pm for those parents who cannot pick up their child at noon. On our final day of VBS we walk to two local retirement facilities to sing and share Bible stories with the residents. Youth in 7th Grade and older are always welcome to help. This past year our VBS has 100 children and youth - you don't want to miss this awesome FREE summer program in our community.
